Chapter Twelve

For two weeks, Kris went to twice-weekly anger management sessions that she and Gail thought were going very well. Secrets were like a ticking time bomb inside of her and defending them would cause another violent outburst. They didn’t talk about lesbianism the entire time, they talked about Micah’s dominance and the loss of her parents. Kris was afraid about life after soccer and identified it as something she should face while it was still a long way off. Micah had her hitting the gym four days per week, running on three days and one day of rest. Vic’s team was playing again and she was watching it in the living room with Micah and Deb.

“I see you have snacks and beverages for the big event Deb. It has to be better that the last game; at least I hope it is. Hear any gossip about what’s happening with the team? Kris asked Micah.

“The morale on the team has seen better days. Maura Haggen’s days as keeper are numbered with no obvious back up. Serge is sitting Vic because her knee was twisted when she slid during the last game. She can’t mistake soccer for baseball and act as if she’s sliding into base. Word is that when you come back you’re gonna see limited minutes because they’re trying to make an example of you.”

“That’s unacceptable Micah, can they do that.”

“They can do anything they want Kris because they could have thrown you off the team for good. I have an option for you that you’ll have to think about.”

“I’m listening,” Kris said.

“The Sprint has been poking around and wondering if you’re interested in rejoining the team. They want a commitment and will put it in writing that you won’t be called up to the national team.”

“The match is just about to start. If they really suck I may never have a chance at the gold medal if I do go back.”

The camera panned to the bench and focused on Vic’s face. She didn’t look happy but her face had healed nicely.

The announcer commented. “Without Kris Temple’s speed and Vic Cannon’s aggressive play this team is hurting. This team was expected to medal and maybe even win the gold. Now it looks like they’ll be left off the podium entirely.”

The team started wobbly in back, again with no vigor. The opponents ended up at the top of the box with a clear shot at the net. Maura missed and they were down by one at the 11-minute mark. Continued sloppy play resulted in two more easy looks at the net one, which resulted in a goal.

Mel was in the backfield and set herself up for a header that was badly misdirected. She took her mistake out on an opposing player right in front of the net. She received her first yellow card and the next one came from a hand ball, which sent her to the bench. She seemed fine with that because it meant sitting shoulder to shoulder with Vic.
